The Hanukkah Lamp: Modernist Style and the Jewish Experience
November 19, 2011 – January 15, 2012
This exhibition, featuring a selection of Hanukkah lamps from the Aaron Ha’Tell Collection (Wilmette), offers a unique perspective on the production of artifacts at a time marked by profound transformation. For refugees from Europe who came to the British Mandate of Palestine, the making of these lamps enabled a reflection on the history of a holiday and an attempt to come to terms with unfamiliar experiences. Far from being merely a formal element, modernist style was a reminder of their Europe, brutally dismantled by Nazism. Curated by Rhoda Rosen.
